‘Spotlight on’ Twos Company Rides – Tandem bike riding for blind and visually impaired people

What sport/ activity does your club do?

Tandem bicycle riding for blind and visually impaired people

Tell us more about your sport/ activity?

Twos Company rides are fun and sociable, for anyone in Bristol aged 8 to 80 who is visually impaired or disabled and would like to try tandem cycling in a supportive group. Our trained ride leaders and volunteer ‘front riders’ enable those who would not usually be able to cycle to explore the countryside on a bike.

What is/ are the best thing(s) about your sport/ activity?

We welcome new riders of all abilities to experience fun, fitness and freedom through the power of cycling. Some of our riders have been blind from birth, some lost their sight due to an accident or deteriorating eye condition, others are affected by disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy or Down’s syndrome.

Are there any misconceptions about your activity that you would like to change?

You don’t need any special training or gear to join ‘Two’s Company (although we would recommend taking a cycle helmet). Cycling is simple and fun for almost anyone, whatever your ability.

How did your club start?

Two’s Company has been going for over 10 years. It started with just a couple of volunteers with tandems who wanted to offer rides to blind people.

Where are you based?

We are based at The Create Centre, Bristol, BS1 6XN. We offer rides in and around the Bristol area.

Who is part of your club?

Anyone from 8 to 80+ who has a visual impairment, or who is struggling to ride a solo bike due to a disability.

What do you aim to achieve?

We help our riders to get fitter, gain confidence, and enjoy making new friends in a fun, sociable atmosphere.

What is the best thing about your club?

We offer around 30 group rides and events per year. Our rides vary in length and difficulty: from gentle, beginners’ rides to longer, more challenging ones. This enables riders to challenge themselves (if they like), and gradually increase their fitness.

What do people need to do if they would like to try your sport/ activity? Do they need to be a certain standard?

You don’t require any previous experience and we offer taster sessions for new riders. Just get in touch with Robin at tandemrides@lifecycleuk.org.uk or ring us on 0117 353 4580.

What else would you like to tell us?

The rides take place mostly at weekends, but you can ‘have a go’ anytime with one of our regular Taster Days. Each summer we organise a Two’s Company weekend away, giving riders the chance to experience a change of scene and get their teeth into some longer rides.

Do you have a participant or parent who would like to say a quote about what they feel about your sessions/ Club?

Here are some quotes from a few of our riders:

“I never thought I would be able to do this after I lost my sight. To feel the wind rushing past you, get some exercise, smell the flowers and trees as you go past. It’s a revelation. This has been the gateway for me to enter a better life after sight loss” – Steve

“I love having the chance to mix with some very interesting people both front riders and back riders. There is never a dull moment!” – Mike

Everyone feels welcome and has a voice. There is no hierarchy so the atmosphere is always friendly, supportive and encouraging” – Catherine
