Bristol Active City

Bristol was named as a European City of Sport for 2017. The city was judged on its sporting facilities, residents’ level of participation, the success of local teams and sporting events.

The aim was to bring together the best of what the city does to support and celebrate sport with even more events and campaigns during the year.

The Bristol Active City website and social media channels will continue to promote the benefits of sport and physical activity and build on the opportunities created during 2017 for people to participate at all levels.

According to recent research, 39% of adults in Bristol do not do enough physical activity – less than is required as part of a healthy lifestyle. 83% of 15 years olds do not do enough physical activity each day, taking less than 60 minutes exercise a day and less than 3 days a week muscle and bone strength-building exercise. This is having a direct effect on our health with over 57% of adults in the city being classified as overweight or obese.
